I have been doing a lot of research this summer into possible rootstocks for the Fairbanks area. The Peking cotoneaster and the American mountain ash might be a good rootstock to try on pears. They might cause the pears to mature the wood faster, cause a dwarfing effect, and cause the pears to bear earlier. Hawthorn’s might make a fair rootstock for pears, but the graft is usually short-lived. The scion usually dies in 5 years. At Oregon State University there has been some success with the “Old Home” pear as an interstem on hawthorn. This produces a dwarf, precocious tree. According to “Ecological Fruit Production in the North,” chokecherries and pin cherries supposedly make good rootstocks for cherries. I think they might make the scionwood harden off sooner than the traditional “Mahaleb” rootstock. I also think that the “Oppenheim” cherry might be hardy enough to grow in the Interior. It was developed in West Germany and is not currently available in the US. If anyone has ever tried these unusual rootstocks I would like to hear of your success or failures.
